ASTM A268 TP410 stainless steel tubes are a workhorse grade chosen for their balance of cost, strength, and moderate corrosion/heat resistance. Type 410 is a martensitic (not ferritic, but included under A268 for tubular products) stainless steel.They are a standard choice for feedwater heaters, oil & gas tubulars, and mechanical components where operating conditions are well-defined and not highly aggressive. Always consult corrosion and materials engineers for specific service environment suitability.

 

 

Key Characteristics of Stainless Steel Type 410: 

  • Martensitic Structure: Can be hardened by heat treatment (quenching and tempering).

  • Magnetic: Yes, strongly magnetic.

  • Corrosion Resistance: Moderate. Good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, mild acids, and alkalis. Not suitable for severe corrosive environments (like chloride-rich settings where pitting can occur).

  • Mechanical Properties: High strength and hardness after heat treatment, but with lower ductility compared to austenitic grades (like 304).

  • Machinability: Good.

  • Weldability: Fair, but requires pre-heating and post-weld heat treatment to avoid cracking and restore corrosion resistance.
