ASTM A269 TP316/316L Stainless Steel Tube Seamless Heat Exchanger Tubes
The bright-annealed bore is what separates this SKU from our pickled seamless and welded A269 options. Pickling leaves a matte surface around Ra 1.5–3.0 µm; bright annealing holds Ra ≤ 0.4 µm (16 µin) typical. In a shell-and-tube, U-tube or small-diameter exchanger this is measurable: fewer nucleation sites for deposit build-up, a lower fouling resistance after the first operating cycle, less pressure drop across the tube side, and a bore that can be cleaned by flushing instead of mechanical brushing.
For pharmaceutical water-for-injection coolers, clean-steam condensers, food CIP/SIP circuits and ultra-pure water loops, it also removes the need for post-installation pickling or passivation. The 2.0–3.0% molybdenum content covers chloride-bearing cooling water, acetic and formic acid, sulfite and dilute sulphuric service, while the 0.035% maximum carbon of the L grade keeps chromium carbides from precipitating at the grain boundaries during U-bending or field welding.

Dual certification is possible because the two grades overlap: a heat with carbon ≤ 0.035% and nickel between 10.0 and 14.0% satisfies both TP316 and TP316L simultaneously.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should we buy to A269 or A213 for an exchanger?
A269 is written for general corrosive service and covers both seamless and welded tube, with one chemical analysis and mechanical test per lot. A213 is the boiler and superheater specification and carries higher test frequency and mandatory hardness limits. For a water-cooled condenser or a chemical cooler, A269 is sufficient; if the exchanger falls under boiler code or the customer's specification calls for A213, we supply the same chemistry against A213 with the extra testing included.
Why specify seamless when welded A269 is cheaper?
The welded option is bright annealed as well and is a legitimate choice below roughly 1500 psi in non-cyclic service. Seamless is specified where the tube side sees pressure cycling, high pressure, or chloride-bearing water, because a seam-free wall removes both the weld HAZ and the crevice geometry that initiate pitting and fatigue cracking.
Can 316 and 316L be delivered on one certificate?
Yes. A heat with carbon ≤ 0.035% and nickel in the 10.0–14.0% range meets both grades, so the tube is marked TP316/316L and certified to both on a single EN 10204 3.1 document. This is the usual request from buyers who want design flexibility without holding two stocks.
What bend radius can be supplied with a U-bend?
Bends are formed after full-length solution annealing, with a centreline radius of at least 1.5D for OD up to 1 in; tighter radii are quoted case by case with a stress-relief anneal and hardness verification. Ovality at the bend and leg length tolerance are reported on the inspection sheet.
