Product Description

ASTM A106 GR.B Carbon Steel Studded Finned Tubes – High-Efficiency Nailhead Fin Tubes for Industrial Heat Transfer

Introduction to ASTM A106 GR.B Carbon Steel Studded Finned Tubes

Our ASTM A106 GR.B Carbon Steel Studded Finned Tubes (base tube: ASTM A106 Grade B seamless carbon steel + CS nailhead fins) are engineered for superior heat transfer in high-temperature, high-fouling environments. These studded fin tubes, also known as nailhead fin tubes, significantly increase the external surface area compared to plain tubes, delivering 2–3 times higher heat transfer efficiency. Manufactured to strict ASTM/ASME standards, they are the preferred choice for petrochemical, power generation, and refinery applications where reliability under extreme conditions is critical.

Structure of ASTM A106 GR.B Carbon Steel Studded Finned Tubes

The ASTM A106 GR.B Carbon Steel Studded Finned Tubes consist of three key components manufactured through a precision electric resistance welding (ERW) process:

  • Base Tube: Seamless ASTM A106 Grade B carbon steel pipe, providing excellent high-temperature strength and pressure resistance.

  • Fins (Studs): Cylindrical carbon steel (CS) studs (nailhead design) welded perpendicular to the tube surface in a staggered or inline pattern.

  • Embedding Process: Automatic resistance welding where studs are mechanically pressed and electrically welded to the base tube. This creates a metallurgical bond with weld penetration ≥1.5 mm, ensuring zero fin dropout even under thermal cycling and vibration. No filler material is used, guaranteeing a clean, high-strength joint.

This integral structure offers unmatched mechanical integrity and fouling resistance compared to wrapped or extruded fins.

Chemical Composition of ASTM A106 GR.B Carbon Steel Studded Finned Tubes

All materials comply with ASTM specifications for maximum corrosion resistance and mechanical performance in high-temperature service.

Base Tube (ASTM A106 Grade B) Chemical Composition:

Element Specification
Carbon (C) 0.30% max
Manganese (Mn) 0.29–1.06%
Phosphorus (P) 0.035% max
Sulfur (S) 0.035% max
Silicon (Si) 0.10% min
Chromium (Cr) 0.40% max
Copper (Cu) 0.40% max
Molybdenum (Mo) 0.15% max
Nickel (Ni) 0.40% max
Vanadium (V) 0.08% max

Fins (Carbon Steel – CS): Commercial-grade carbon steel rods matched to base tube chemistry (typical low-carbon steel equivalent to ASTM A36/A106 standards) for perfect weld compatibility and thermal expansion matching.

Dimensional Tolerances of ASTM A106 GR.B Carbon Steel Studded Finned Tubes

We maintain tight tolerances to ensure perfect fit in heat exchanger bundles and consistent performance.

Standard Dimensional Range & Tolerances:

Parameter Typical Range Tolerance
Base Tube OD 38–323.9 mm (1.5"–12.75") ±1% of nominal OD
Base Tube Wall Thickness 2–12 mm -12.5% under nominal (min wall)
Stud Diameter 6–13 mm (standard 12.7 mm) ±0.3 mm
Stud Height 10–38 mm ±0.3 mm
Stud Pitch (Longitudinal) 8–30 mm ±0.5 mm
Straightness ≤2.5 mm / 3 m
Base Tube Ovality ≤1%

Custom lengths up to 24 m available with circumferential welds (100% X-ray tested if required).

Performance Advantages of ASTM A106 GR.B Carbon Steel Studded Finned Tubes

The ASTM A106 GR.B Carbon Steel Studded Finned Tubes deliver measurable operational benefits:

  • Heat Transfer Enhancement: 2–3× surface area increase creates localized turbulence for superior convective heat transfer.

  • High-Temperature Resistance: Rated for continuous service up to 650°C (1200°F) with excellent thermal cycling stability.

  • Fouling Resistance: Open stud design prevents ash/dust buildup common in fired heaters, reducing cleaning frequency by up to 70%.

  • Mechanical Strength: Welded bond withstands vibration and pressure surges far better than mechanically attached fins.

  • Energy Efficiency: Lower pressure drop on the gas side while maximizing heat recovery, reducing fuel consumption in boilers and furnaces.

  • Long Service Life: Carbon steel construction with uniform metallurgy minimizes galvanic corrosion.

Detailed Applications of ASTM A106 GR.B Carbon Steel Studded Finned Tubes

Our ASTM A106 GR.B Carbon Steel Studded Finned Tubes are proven in the most demanding industries:

  • Petrochemical & Refinery: Convection sections of fired heaters, cracking furnaces, and reformers.

  • Power Generation: Waste heat recovery boilers, HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generators), and fluidized bed combustors.

  • Oil & Gas: Steam boilers, superheaters, and air preheaters in offshore platforms and onshore processing plants.

  • Chemical Processing: High-temperature gas coolers and process heaters handling corrosive flue gases.

  • Cement & Metallurgy: Kiln waste heat recovery systems where fouling is extreme.

It's hot and humid here, and our old wrap-on tubes used to rust like crazy. Switched to your extruded ones—the aluminum fin covers the steel pipe perfectly, so corrosion shouldn't be an issue.

the SS409 pins resist sulfur corrosion better than carbon steel pins we used earlier. In furnace service, that means longer runs between maintenance.

As an engineer in Siberia, I tested these fin tubes in extreme cold (-30°C). The ASTM A213 T11 steel performed well with no thermal cracks, and cooling efficiency met expectations (88%). That said, the Russian-language documentation had translation errors in technical terms, causing minor confusion during installation.
