ASTM A106 Gr.B studded tubes are designed for heat-transfer duties in the convection sections of process fired heaters used in refineries, petrochemical plants, and other high-temperature process facilities. Manufactured with ASTM A106 Gr.B seamless carbon steel base tubes and welded metal studs, they provide an enlarged external heat-transfer surface for recovering energy from hot flue gas.
In fired-heater convection sections, studded tubes help improve gas-side heat transfer where conventional bare tubes may provide insufficient surface area within the available installation space. The stud arrangement can be tailored to the furnace design, flue-gas conditions, tube layout, and required heat duty. Stud material, diameter, height, pitch, welding method, and inspection requirements are specified according to the approved drawings and project requirements.
The base tube complies with ASTM A106 Gr.B when specified and verified by material test documentation. Each finished studded tube can be manufactured to the required dimensions, stud configuration, end preparation, and inspection scope, supporting reliable integration into process heater coils and replacement projects.
High-temperature carbon steel base tube: ASTM A106 Gr.B seamless pipe for suitable high-temperature service conditions.
Enhanced gas-side heat transfer: Welded studs increase the external surface available for heat exchange.
Application-specific configuration: Stud height, diameter, pitch, arrangement, and stud material can be selected to suit the heater design.
Designed for demanding furnace environments: Appropriate for convection sections where thermal cycling, flue-gas exposure, and mechanical integrity must be considered during engineering.
Project-based quality control: Base tube traceability, dimensional checks, stud-weld inspection, and specified testing can be included in the inspection plan.
| Application | Typical operating context | Purpose of the studded tubes |
|---|---|---|
| Refinery process fired heaters | Convection sections downstream of the radiant chamber | Increase gas-side heat-transfer surface and support heat recovery before flue gas exits the heater |
| Petrochemical process furnaces | Heater coils serving process streams in petrochemical production | Provide a specified heat-transfer surface within the available convection-bank envelope |
| Crude oil and process-stream heaters | Preheating duties in refinery process units | Support the required heat duty when selected as part of the engineered coil design |
| Industrial process heating systems | High-temperature gas-side heat exchange | Offer a configurable extended-surface tube solution for suitable carbon-steel service |
| Fired-heater revamp and replacement projects | Existing convection banks with defined tube spacing and connection details | Replace worn or damaged components while maintaining compatibility with the approved layout |
The final application suitability depends on design temperature and pressure, tube-side fluid, flue-gas composition, corrosion conditions, thermal stresses, and the heater designer's calculations. ASTM A106 Gr.B should not be selected solely on the basis of its material designation.
The table below gives the commonly specified chemical composition limits for ASTM A106 Gr.B. Acceptance is based on the applicable edition of ASTM A106/A106M and the material test certificate.
| Element | Requirement, wt.% |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | ≤ 0.30 |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.29–1.06 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.035 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.035 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≥ 0.10 |
| Chromium (Cr) | ≤ 0.40 |
| Copper (Cu) | ≤ 0.40 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | ≤ 0.15 |
| Nickel (Ni) | ≤ 0.40 |
| Vanadium (V) | ≤ 0.08 |
For Grade B, the applicable specification also limits the combined content of chromium, copper, molybdenum, nickel, and vanadium. The governing ASTM edition and the mill test certificate should be checked for the exact requirements. These figures apply to the base tube, not automatically to the stud material. <Cite refs={["turn559423search24","turn559423search5"]} />
| Mechanical property | Grade B requirement |
