ASTM A234 WP9 CL1 Seamless 180 Degree Return Bend For Power Generation Plants
This ASTM A234 WP9 CL1 alloy steel 180 degree return bend is a fabricated bend built up from 9% chromium – 1% molybdenum steel segments, formed, welded and post-weld heat treated to reproduce the 9Cr-1Mo metallurgy of a seamless fitting. Fabricated construction is the practical answer for large-diameter and heavy-wall U-bends that exceed the size range of seamless fittings, and for replacement bends required during a short shutdown window. Every bend is supplied in the normalized and tempered condition, with full weld traceability, non-destructive testing reports and dimensional inspection records.
| Element | Composition (%) | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.15 max | Controls strength and weldability |
| Manganese (Mn) | 0.30 – 0.60 | Improves strength and hardenability |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.03 max | Impurity, kept low for toughness |
| Sulfur (S) | 0.03 max | Impurity, kept low for weldability |
| Silicon (Si) | 0.50 – 1.00 | Deoxidizer, contributes to strength |
| Chromium (Cr) | 8.00 – 10.00 | High-temperature strength and oxidation resistance |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 0.90 – 1.10 | Creep resistance at elevated temperature |
The 9% chromium and 1% molybdenum balance is what gives this grade its common name, 9Cr-1Mo steel, and its suitability for high-temperature, high-pressure service.
Measured on specimens in the heat-treated condition (normalized and tempered):
| Property | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength | ≥ 585 MPa (85 ksi) |
| Yield strength (0.2% offset) | ≥ 415 MPa (60 ksi) |
| Elongation in 50.8 mm (2 in) | ≥ 20% |
| Hardness | ≤ 192 HBW (or equivalent HRB / HV) |
Heat treatment: normalizing at approximately 900–955°C followed by air cooling, then tempering at approximately 675–730°C. Fabricated bends receive a post-weld heat treatment after welding so that the weld metal, heat-affected zone and base metal reach a uniform hardness and toughness level.

The 9Cr-1Mo grade is normally selected for continuous service in the 540°C to 650°C range, where carbon steel would suffer from oxidation and creep. Fabricated bends are commonly chosen in these circuits when the tube layout calls for a large-bore return that is not produced as a seamless fitting.
To receive a firm quotation and a production drawing, please confirm the following points: quantity, nominal pipe size, bend angle and radius (long or short), wall thickness or schedule, material class (WP9 CL1), seamless or fabricated construction preference, end preparation, NDE and documentation requirements, and the requested delivery date. Where a replacement bend is needed for an existing circuit, a sketch or tube layout drawing is usually enough for our engineering team to confirm the center-to-center dimensions and the fabrication route.
