Product Description

ASTM A268 TP430 / UNS S43000 Ferretic Stainless Steel Seamless Tube Heat Exchanger Tube

ASTM A268 TP430 / UNS S43000 is a ferritic stainless steel seamless tube for heat exchangers, containing 16–18% Cr and very low Ni (≤0.75%). It is fundamentally an economical, high-temperature oxidation-resistant tubing without nickel stabilization.

Engineers select these tubes only when the operating environment aligns with their unique strengths and strictly avoids their fatal weaknesses. The decision is rarely based on "best performance" but on "best fit for a narrow, specific niche."

How to choose right materials of A268 ferritic and martensitic tube?
Grade (UNS) Key Feature When to Consider It When to Avoid It
TP409 (S40900) Cheap, Ti-stabilized Low-cost exhaust tubes, mufflers, or dry flue gas < 650°C. Any pressure part or corrosive condensate.
TP430 (S43000) Base grade, high Cr (16-18%) Dry hot air/gas up to 870°C, nitric acid service, strong caustic (NaOH). Low-cost, non-welded heat exchanger bundles. Any welding; any aqueous chlorides; any low temp.
TP439 (S43035) Ti-stabilized (improved weldability) When welding is required but you still need 430-level oxidation resistance. Used in automotive exhaust heat exchangers and welded recuperators. Chloride pitting environments (same as 430).
TP444 (S44400) Mo-stabilized (18Cr-2Mo) Slightly wet environments with mild chlorides (e.g., potable water, low-chloride condensate). Has better pitting resistance than 316L in some cases. High-chloride seawater or strong reducing acids.

Application

  • Refineries / Petrochemical: Air preheater tubes (dry flue gas), reformer outlet pigtails (dry H₂-rich gas).

  • Power Plants: Boiler air heaters, recuperators in gas turbines.

  • Chemical Processing: Concentrated sulfuric acid (93-98%) coolers, nitric acid condensers, caustic evaporator tubes (NaOH).

  • Automotive / Marine: Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) coolers (where condensate is managed).

It's genuine 321H — titanium-stabilized, so no worries about sensitization or intergranular corrosion during welding. Our welder said it welded nicely with no cracking.

Been running about 6 months now in cyclic service. No leaks, no failures. Heat transfer still where it should be.

We checked a few before installation — wall thickness consistent, roundness good. Welded in without problems.
