ASTM A789 UNS S32205 / SAF 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Seamless Tube Heat Exchanger Tube

 

 

A cold-finished, seamless tube manufactured in accordance with ASTM A789 / ASME SA789 (Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Ferritic/Austenitic Stainless Steel Tubing for General Service), made from UNS S32205 – a nitrogen-alloyed duplex (austenitic-ferritic) stainless steel with a nominal composition of 22% chromium, 5% nickel, and 3% molybdenum. This tube is specifically intended for use in heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat-transfer equipment, where it leverages the material's high yield strength (≥450 MPa), excellent resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC), and improved pitting resistance (PREN ≥ 33) compared to standard austenitic grades like 316L.
 
 

Key Advantages of Duplex Steel S3205 for Heat Exchanger Tubes

  • High Corrosion Resistance: PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) = 33–35. Excellent resistance to chloride pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) – where 300-series austenitic steels often fail.

  • High Strength: Allows for thinner tube walls, leading to:

    • Reduced weight of the heat exchanger bundle.

    • Improved heat transfer efficiency.

    • Lower material cost per unit of strength.
