Product Description

ASTM A268 TP430 / UNS S43000 Ferretic Stainless Steel Seamless Heat Exchanger Tube

ASTM A268 TP430 (UNS S43000) is a standard specification for seamless, ferritic stainless steel tube made from Grade 430 (16–18% chromium, low nickel, no molybdenum). When used as a heat exchanger tube, it is intended for non-code or low-pressure applications where the operating environment is free of chlorides, temperatures are below 400°C (750°F) to avoid 475°C embrittlement, and resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is required, but high pitting/crevice corrosion resistance is not.

Key Differentiating Factors Among Ferritic Stainless Steel Grades

Ferritic stainless steels all have a body-centered cubic (BCC) structure, are magnetic, and contain little to no nickel. The main differences come from:

  1. Chromium (Cr) content – affects corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance.

  2. Stabilizing elements (Ti, Nb) – improve weldability and prevent intergranular corrosion.

  3. Molybdenum (Mo) – greatly improves pitting/crevice resistance.

  4. Carbon + Nitrogen – lower is better for toughness and formability.

Here are the key advantages of ferritic stainless steels (TP400 series, e.g., TP430, TP439, TP444) over austenitic stainless steels (TP300 series, e.g., TP304, TP316) – especially relevant for heat exchanger tubing and general industrial applications.

1. Superior Resistance to Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)

2. Lower Material Cost (No Nickel)

3. Higher Thermal Conductivity

4. Lower Coefficient of Thermal Expansion

5. Better Resistance to Galling & Wear

6. Magnetic (for Some Applications)

7. Resistance to Intergranular Corrosion (in Stabilized Grades)

Application

Because of the ASME restriction, TP430 seamless tubes are typically found in non-code or low-pressure heat exchangers such as:

  • Chemical plant preheaters (mild acids, not chlorides)

  • Heat recovery from flue gases (condensing economizers – but only if flue gas is dry)

  • Food processing (non-acidic, non-chloride media like hot water/steam)

  • Automotive oil coolers (closed loop, non-chloride)

  • Desuperheaters (steam to hot water)

It's genuine 321H — titanium-stabilized, so no worries about sensitization or intergranular corrosion during welding. Our welder said it welded nicely with no cracking.

Been running about 6 months now in cyclic service. No leaks, no failures. Heat transfer still where it should be.

We checked a few before installation — wall thickness consistent, roundness good. Welded in without problems.
