ASME SA209 Grade T1a Carbon Steel Boiler Tube Superheater Tube Seamless Steel U Bend Tube

 

 

ASTM A209 / ASME SA209 T1b is a seamless carbon-molybdenum alloy steel tube grade used for elevated-temperature boiler and heat exchanger service. When formed into a U-bend, it refers to a seamless tube bent into a U-shape, typically stress-relieved after bending, to allow thermal expansion in applications such as boiler superheaters, water walls, and shell & tube heat exchangers. The "T1b" grade contains 0.44–0.65% molybdenum for improved creep strength at temperatures up to ~1000°F (538°C).

Inspection & Testing (per ASTM A209)

  • Tensile & Flattening Test: Ensures ductility.

  • Flare Test: Checks for soundness and ability to deform plastically.

  • Hydrostatic or NDT: Either a hydrostatic pressure test or an electromagnetic (eddy current) test is required.

  • Dye Penetrant (PT) or Magnetic Particle (MT): On U-bends, to detect surface cracks after bending and stress relieving.
