The "T1a" designation means it has strictly controlled residual elements (copper, nickel, and chromium) to ensure stable creep resistance and structural integrity under prolonged exposure to elevated temperatures and internal steam pressure. It is typically procured in the normalized condition with optional NDT, suitable for bending, welding, and expansion-rolling into boiler headers.

Maximum Service Temperature & Oxidation Resistance
Oxidation Limit: In dry flue gas or steam atmospheres, the practical upper operating limit for continuous service is 550°C (1022°F). Above this temperature, surface scaling (oxidation) accelerates rapidly, leading to metal wastage.
Creep-Rupture Strength: The molybdenum content significantly enhances creep resistance between 425°C – 550°C (800°F – 1020°F). For reference, the average 100,000-hour creep-rupture strength at 500°C is approximately 85 MPa (12.3 ksi).
Critical Warning: This grade must not be used in the temperature range of 600°C – 675°C (1112°F – 1247°F) for extended periods, as this range promotes severe graphitization—the transformation of iron carbides into free graphite, which drastically reduces ductility and can lead to catastrophic brittle failure. (The "T1a" residual restrictions were specifically introduced to slow down this graphitization process).
The addition of Molybdenum (0.44–0.65%) provides this tube with excellent resistance to creep and oxidation at intermediate temperatures.
