ASTM A106 Gr. B Studded Tubes For Boilers In Waste Heat Recovery Systems
ASTM A106 covers seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service in NPS 1 ⁄ 8 to NPS 48 [DN 6 to DN 1200] inclusive, with nominal (average) wall thickness as given in ASME B36.10M.The surface treatment usually involves applying black paint for rust prevention.ASTM A106 Gr.B carbon steel pipes are widely applied in boilers and waste heat recovery systems due to their high-temperature strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness.Carbon steel surely is much cheaper than stainless steel.

Gr. B | 60ksi (415 MPa) | 35ksi (240 MPa) |
As studded fin tubes, A106 Gr.B pipes increase surface area, improving heat transfer from hot exhaust gases (e.g., in cement plants, refineries, or steel mills, waste heat recovery systems). In the convection chamber of the tubular furnace, in order to enhance the heat transfer effect outside the tube, the heat transfer element often adopts the nail head tube. For studded tubes, they usually be formed with materials such as carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy or copper, providing durability and resistance to corrosion.
A106 Gr.B pipes can handle temperatures up to 750°F (~400°C), making them suitable for boiler tubes, superheaters, furnaces, and economizers in WHRS. By the way, they maintain structural integrity under high-pressure steam and flue gas conditions (common in heat recovery boilers).
ASTM A106 Gr. B seamless pipes usually performs well in dry, high-temperature flue gas environments, but if flue gas contains sulfur or moisture, stainless steel (e.g., 304/316) or alloy-coated pipes may be required.
Application in WHRS,Not Limited As Below
Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs): Used in gas turbine exhaust systems to generate steam from waste heat.
Economizers (Pre-Heat Boiler Feedwater): Recovers low-to-medium grade heat from exhaust gases before they exit the stack.
Exhaust Gas Boilers (Marine & Industrial): Recovers heat from diesel engines, furnaces, and kilns.
Cement & Steel Plant WHRS: Used in preheater towers and clinker cooler exhaust systems.
Refinery & Petrochemical WHRS: Recovers heat from catalytic crackers, reformers, and furnaces.
