ASTM A358-CL1 TP316/TP316L Electric-Fusion-Welded Stainless Steel Pipe with Strong Corrosion Resistance

This specification covers electric-fusion-welded austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel pipe suitable for corrosive or high-temperature service, or both, or for general applications.ASTM A358-CL1 TP316/TP316L Electric-Fusion-Welded Stainless Steel Pipe refers to an electric-fusion-welded austenitic stainless steel pipe manufactured in accordance with ASTM A358/A358M, specified as Class 1 quality level and with dual-certified material TP316/TP316L. The pipe is formed from steel plate or strip by electric-fusion welding (single or double arc welding). Class 1 requires 100% radiographic examination of the weld and permits double-welded joints. The TP316 material meets the high-temperature strength and  excellent intergranular corrosion resistance of TP316L. This product is suitable for high-temperature, corrosive, or low-temperature services and is widely used in chemical, petrochemical, marine engineering, pressure vessels, and heat exchangers.

The Process: EFW (Electric Fusion Welding)

  • EFW is a welding process where the pipe is formed from a flat plate (skelp) and then welded longitudinally.
  • How it works: The plate edges are prepared, brought together, and fused using an electric arc. Filler metal is typically added.
  • Comparison to ERW: While often used interchangeably, EFW typically refers to welding with filler metal (consumables), whereas ERW (Electric Resistance Welding) usually does not use filler metal and relies on pressure and resistance heat. EFW is preferred for thicker walls and critical services.
