ASTM B163 / ASME SB163 UNS N08825 Alloy 825 Seamless Nickel Alloy Tube for Heat Exchanger
Key Properties of Incoloy 825 for Heat Exchangers
Outstanding resistance to: Sulfuric acid (up to moderate concentrations), phosphoric acid, seawater, and reducing acids.
Excellent resistance to: Chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC), pitting, and crevice corrosion.
High temperature oxidation resistance: Good up to ~1800°F (982°C) intermittent, ~1650°F (899°C) continuous.
Why it works: The combination of Ni-Cr-Mo-Cu provides protection in both oxidizing and reducing environments. Added Titanium stabilizes it against intergranular corrosion.

Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) – Hidden Options
ASTM B163 permits either a hydrostatic test or an eddy current (ET) test for acceptance, but this creates subtle traps:
Hydrostatic test: Standard pressure = calculated from allowed fiber stress (50% of yield) but many users miss the requirement to hold pressure for at least 5 seconds per inch of OD. For gas service, a pneumatic test is not required by B163 – you must invoke ASME B31.3 or client specification.
Eddy current test: Only valid for tubes ≤ 4 inches OD. Calibration uses a 0.031” deep notch. However, ET does not detect through‑wall leaks or axial cracks. For corrosive service where pitting is possible, insist on hydrostatic or ultrasonic testing.
Hydrostatic vs. ET cost: Many mills default to ET because it is faster. Always confirm the test method on your PO.
Application
Chemical processing: Heater, reboilers, and condenser tubes in sulfuric/phosphoric acid service.
Oil & gas: Sour gas service (wet H₂S), wellhead heat exchangers, downhole tubing.
Marine: Seawater heat exchangers, evaporators, scrubbers.
Pollution control: Stack liners, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems.
Nuclear: Moderator cooling circuits (CANDU reactors).
