ASTM A213 T9 Seamless Alloy Steel U Bend Heat Exchanger Tube for High-temperature Services

 

 

A seamless ferritic alloy steel tube (9% chromium, 1% molybdenum) manufactured to ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 specifications, formed into a U‑shape (U‑bend) for use in shell and tube heat exchangers, boilers, and high‑temperature service applications.
The “T9” grade offers high‑temperature oxidation resistance, creep strength, and resistance to hydrogen attack. U‑bend configuration accommodates thermal expansion without requiring expansion joints. After cold bending, the tube must receive post‑bend heat treatment (stress relief or annealing) to restore mechanical properties and eliminate residual stresses.

Key Characteristics of Grade T9

  • Oxidation Resistance: Excellent scaling resistance up to approximately 650°C (1200°F) .

  • Creep Strength: High creep rupture strength due to the Molybdenum addition.

  • Hydrogen Attack: Suitable for high-temperature hydrogen service in refineries (often used in the hydrogen reformer section and heat exchangers).

  • Fabricability: While it has good ductility, T9 is a hardenable steel. Cold bending (U-bending) requires careful attention to the bending radius and subsequent heat treatment.

These tubes are primarily used in critical high-temperature services within:
  • Petrochemical Refineries: Hydrogen reformer units, hydrocrackers, and catalytic reformers.
  • Fired Heaters: Where resistance to high-temperature sulfur corrosion is required.
  • Power Generation: Superheaters and reheaters in high-pressure boilers.
  • Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers: Specifically in environments where the tube side fluid is at high temperatures or contains corrosive agents.
