ASTM A213 / ASME SA213 TP317L / 1.4438 / UNS S31703 Stainless Steel U Bend Heat Exchanger Tube
ASTM A213 TP317L Stainless Steel U-Bend Heat Exchanger Tube is a seamless austenitic stainless steel tube specifically designed for use in heat exchangers, condensers, and similar heat transfer apparatus. ASTM A213 TP317L U-Bend Tube is a high-performance, seamless product designed for the most demanding heat exchanger applications where standard stainless steels would fail due to pitting, crevice corrosion, or stress corrosion cracking.
Why choose 317L over 304/L or 316/L?
Better Pitting Resistance: Thanks to the 3-4% Molybdenum (vs. 2% in 316L), it is much more resistant to localized corrosion from chlorides (saltwater, bleach, cooling tower chemicals).
Better Acid Resistance: It handles sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids much better than 316L. This is why it is the standard for Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers in power plants.
Weldability: Like 316L, the "L" means low carbon. You can weld it without worrying about the weld rotting away later (intergranular corrosion).
Cost Efficiency: It is more expensive than 316L, but significantly cheaper than "Super Austenitic" grades. If 316L is failing in your system due to pitting, 317L is the logical next step up the ladder.

Application
Chemical Processing: Heat exchangers, condensers, and evaporators handling aggressive chemicals like hot sulfuric, phosphoric, and acetic acids.
Petrochemical Industry: Services where sour (H₂S) or chloride-containing environments are present.
Pollution Control: Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems in power plants, where components are exposed to highly corrosive sulfurous and sulfuric acid condensates.
Pulp and Paper Industry: In digesters and bleaching equipment.
Pharmaceutical and Food Processing: Where cleanliness and resistance to cleaning agents are required.
Marine Applications: Components exposed to seawater, though care must be taken regarding temperature and velocity.
