Heat Exchanger tubes are designed to transfer heat from one fluid to another. They require precise dimensions (outside diameter and wall thickness), excellent thermal conductivity (for stainless steel), and the ability to be expanded or rolled into tube sheets without cracking.
For heat exchangers, a smooth surface improves heat transfer efficiency and is easier to keep clean (less fouling).
The tube is heat treated in a furnace with a controlled atmosphere (usually hydrogen or a vacuum) rather than open air. Because there is no oxygen present, no scale (oxidation layer) forms on the surface. The tube comes out of the furnace with its original bright, shiny, and smooth surface intact.

Bright Annealing (BA) Process Details:

  • Atmosphere: The furnace uses pure Hydrogen (H₂), Argon, or a vacuum. Hydrogen acts as a reducing agent.

  • Temperature: Annealing occurs around 1900°F to 2050°F (1040°C to 1120°C) .

  • Cooling: Rapid cooling (gas quenching) in the protected atmosphere to prevent carbide precipitation.

  • Surface Finish: The resulting BA finish typically has a surface roughness (Ra) of 0.2 µm to 0.6 µm (8 to 25 micro-inches). This is smoother than standard Pickled finishes.

It's genuine 321H — titanium-stabilized, so no worries about sensitization or intergranular corrosion during welding. Our welder said it welded nicely with no cracking.
