According to ASTM A213, the final heat treatment for TP321H must be a solution anneal (thermal stabilization) at a temperature of at least 1100°C (2012°F) , followed by a rapid quench (usually water quench or rapid air cool depending on section size). This ensures the Titanium carbides are dissolved and the material is fully austenitic.

 

 

TP321H is a "stabilized" stainless steel. It contains Titanium (Ti) at least five times the carbon content.

  • Why Stabilized? In standard 304/316 stainless steel, when heated to high temperatures (800°F - 1500°F / 427°C - 816°C), carbon can combine with chromium to form chromium carbide at the grain boundaries (sensitization). This reduces corrosion resistance.

  • The "H" Difference: The Titanium in this alloy has a higher affinity for carbon than chromium does. It forms Titanium carbides instead, leaving the chromium in solid solution to maintain corrosion resistance.

321H, Key Advantages of the "H" Grade
