ASTM A334 / ASME SA334 Grade 6 Carbon Steel Seamless Tube Low-Temperature Heat Exchanger Tube
For heat exchanger services operating in arctic climates or cryogenic processing plants, engineers typically specify ASME SA334 Grade 6 seamless tubing. This grade is essentially a fine-grain, killed carbon steel that undergoes normalizing to achieve a uniform ferrite-pearlite structure. Its key distinction from standard boiler tubes is the mandatory impact testing at -45°C, which guarantees ductility below the ductile-to-brittle transition point. While it is more costly than standard carbon steel, it is far more economical than switching to stainless steels for temperatures down to -50°F.
The Critical Link: The Material (Grade 6)
Both standards specify the exact same material for Grade 6. It is a seamless or welded 3.5% Nickel steel designed specifically to retain ductility and resist brittle fracture at temperatures as low as -50°F (-45°C).
You can think of it this way:
Grade 6 (3.5% Nickel Steel) is the material recipe.
ASTM A333 is the rulebook for making that material into pipe.
ASTM A334 is the rulebook for making that material into heat exchanger tube.
A334 Gr. 6 vs. A333 Gr. 6: They share the same chemistry and impact requirements. A333 is the specification for Pipe (used for welding fittings and pipelines). A334 is the specification for Tube (used for heat exchangers). The dimensional tolerances (ASTM A450 vs. A530) and inspection criteria differ.

Heat Treatment (Normalizing)
To achieve the required grain structure and mechanical properties, the tubes must be heat treated. For Grade 6, the typical heat treatment is Normalizing.
Process: Heating the steel to a uniform temperature above its critical range (typically around 1650°F / 900°C) and then cooling in air.
Purpose: This refines the grain structure, ensuring uniform mechanical properties and enhancing low-temperature toughness.
Application
Because of these properties, SA334 Grade 6 seamless tubes are used specifically where the metal temperature drops below the limits of standard carbon steel (like A179 or A210). Common applications include:
Cryogenic Gas Processing: Heat exchangers in plants processing Liquid Natural Gas (LNG), ethylene, or propane.
Refrigeration Systems: Industrial refrigeration units where temperatures drop significantly.
Northern Pipelines and Facilities: Heat exchangers located in arctic environments where ambient temperatures are extreme.
Air Separation Units: Plants that separate oxygen and nitrogen from the air (operating at cryogenic temperatures).
