ASTM A333 Grade 6 Carbon Steel Seamless Pipe Heat Exchanger Tube
ASTM A333 Grade 6 Seamless Tube is a 3.5% Nickel-alloy steel, low-temperature service tubing valued for its proven toughness down to -50°F. While its standard is for "pipe," its seamless form and precise dimensions make it a reliable, code-compliant choice for critical tubular equipment operating in cold and cryogenic environments, bridging the gap between carbon steel and higher nickel alloys.
The Critical Link: The Material (Grade 6)
Both standards specify the exact same material for Grade 6. It is a seamless or welded 3.5% Nickel steel designed specifically to retain ductility and resist brittle fracture at temperatures as low as -50°F (-45°C).
You can think of it this way:
Grade 6 (3.5% Nickel Steel) is the material recipe.
ASTM A333 is the rulebook for making that material into pipe.
ASTM A334 is the rulebook for making that material into heat exchanger tube.

Important Considerations for Procurement & Use
Specify "Seamless": Clearly state "Seamless" to avoid welded construction.
Impact Test Verification: Ensure the Mill Test Certificate (MTC) reports the actual -45°C / -50°F Charpy V-Notch results.
Dimensional Standard: For tubing, specify exact Outside Diameter and Minimum Wall Thickness. While it's an A333 pipe, it can be manufactured to tighter "tube" tolerances.
Ends: Specify end finish (plain, beveled for welding, or grooved for tube rolling).
Fabrication: Welds must be made with compatible low-nickel electrodes and procedures qualified for low-temperature service to maintain toughness in the Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ).
Application
This material is the workhorse for shell & tube heat exchangers operating in moderately low-temperature processes:
Gas Processing: Propane, ethane, and LNG heat exchangers (in pre-cooling stages).
Petrochemical: Ethylene and ammonia plant chillers.
Refrigeration: Industrial refrigeration systems.
Offshore: Cooling systems on platforms in cold climates.
