The Critical Link: The Material (Grade 6)

Both standards specify the exact same material for Grade 6. It is a seamless or welded 3.5% Nickel steel designed specifically to retain ductility and resist brittle fracture at temperatures as low as -50°F (-45°C).

Important Considerations for Procurement & Use

  • Specify "Seamless": Clearly state "Seamless" to avoid welded construction.

  • Impact Test Verification: Ensure the Mill Test Certificate (MTC) reports the actual -45°C / -50°F Charpy V-Notch results.

  • Dimensional Standard: For tubing, specify exact Outside Diameter and Minimum Wall Thickness. While it's an A333 pipe, it can be manufactured to tighter "tube" tolerances.

  • Ends: Specify end finish (plain, beveled for welding, or grooved for tube rolling).

  • Fabrication: Welds must be made with compatible low-nickel electrodes and procedures qualified for low-temperature service to maintain toughness in the Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ).
