ASTM A269 is a specification by the American Society for Testing and Materials for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing used in corrosion-resistant and high-temperature service. The TP316L grade refers to a low-carbon variant of Type 316 stainless steel, optimized for welding and harsh environments.

Superior corrosion resistance in acidic/chloride environments (vs. 304/316).Enhanced weldability due to low carbon content.High strength and durability at elevated temperatures.Smooth, seamless structure ideal for high-pressure applications.

 

 

Chemical Composition:

  • Chromium (Cr): 16–18% (provides oxidation/corrosion resistance).

  • Nickel (Ni): 10–14% (stabilizes austenitic structure, enhancing ductility and toughness).

  • Molybdenum (Mo): 2–3% (improves resistance to pitting/crevice corrosion in chloride environments).

  • Carbon (C): ≤0.03% (low carbon minimizes carbide precipitation during welding).

  • Other elements: Manganese (≤2%), Silicon (≤0.75%), Phosphorus (≤0.045%), Sulfur (≤0.03%), Iron (balance).

 

Mechanical Properties:

 

  • Tensile Strength: ≥70 ksi (485 MPa).

  • Yield Strength: ≥25 ksi (170 MPa).

  • Elongation: ≥40% (in 2 inches).

  • Hardness: ≤90 HRB (Rockwell B) or ≤200 HB (Brinell).

  • Density: 8.0 g/cm³.

  • Melting Point: ~1375–1400°C.
