HFW fin tubes for economizers are designed to recover waste heat from hot flue gases and transfer it to boiler feedwater or another process fluid. By attaching a continuous helical fin to the outside surface of a steel tube using high-frequency resistance welding (HFW), the heat-transfer surface area is significantly increased without requiring a proportionate increase in equipment size.
Our HFW fin tubes are available with ASME SA376 TP347H stainless steel base tubes, a niobium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel grade developed for high-temperature service. TP347H combines good oxidation resistance, high-temperature strength and resistance to intergranular corrosion associated with sensitization.
These properties make TP347H a suitable material option for selected high-temperature economizer and waste-heat recovery applications, particularly where operating conditions require an austenitic stainless steel rather than conventional carbon or low-alloy steel.
Each finned tube can be manufactured to the customer's drawings, technical specifications and operating requirements.
High heat-transfer efficiency: HFW-attached fins increase the external heat-transfer area and improve gas-side heat exchange.
Reliable fin attachment: High-frequency resistance welding creates a continuous metallurgical bond between the fin strip and base tube.
High-temperature capability: TP347H is a niobium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel suitable for demanding elevated-temperature service.
Oxidation and corrosion resistance: Chromium and nickel provide resistance to oxidation and many industrial process environments.
Dimensional flexibility: Tube diameter, wall thickness, fin height, fin pitch and fin thickness can be customized.
Long service potential: Proper material selection, fabrication and operating conditions help maintain fin integrity and heat-transfer performance.
HFW fin tubes made with TP347H stainless steel can be used in:
Industrial boiler economizers: Recovering residual heat from boiler exhaust gases to preheat feedwater.
Waste-heat recovery systems: Improving energy utilization in industrial furnaces, process plants and power-generation facilities.
High-temperature gas heat exchangers: Transferring heat from hot exhaust streams to water or other process fluids.
Petrochemical and chemical plants: Supporting heat recovery in selected high-temperature process systems.
Power generation facilities: Used in specially specified boiler and heat-recovery equipment.
The final material selection should consider flue-gas composition, metal temperature, feedwater chemistry, pressure, corrosion risk and the possibility of ash deposition or dew-point corrosion.

Specification clarification: ASME SA-376 covers seamless austenitic stainless-steel pipe for high-temperature central-station service. In this product description, SA-376 applies to the seamless TP347H base tube, while HFW describes the process used to attach the external fin strip. The fin attachment process and its acceptance criteria should be agreed separately with the purchaser.
The following are indicative manufacturing ranges for HFW fin tubes. They are not a complete list of dimensional requirements prescribed by ASME SA-376. Final dimensions depend on the equipment design and manufacturing capability.
| Parameter | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Base tube outside diameter | 25.4–76.2 mm |
| Base tube wall thickness | 2.0–8.0 mm |
| Tube length | 3,000–18,000 mm |
| Fin height | 10–25 mm |
| Fin thickness | 0.8–2.0 mm |
| Fin pitch | 3–12 mm |
| Fin type | Solid helical fin |
| Fin arrangement | Continuous spiral |
| Fin attachment | High-frequency resistance welding |
Other dimensions, including larger tube diameters, heavier walls, special fin profiles and non-standard lengths, can be considered according to project requirements.
The following composition limits are representative of ASME SA-376 TP347H requirements. The applicable edition of the standard and the material test certificate should govern final acceptance.
| Element | Chemical Composition (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.04–0.10 |
| Manganese (Mn) | ≤ 2.00 |
| Silicon (Si) | ≤ 0.75 |
| Phosphorus (P) | ≤ 0.045 |
| Sulfur (S) | ≤ 0.030 |
| Chromium (Cr) | 17.0–20.0 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 9.0–13.0 |
| Columbium/Niobium + Tantalum (Nb + Ta) | ≥ 8 × C; ≤ 1.10 |
Material characteristics:
Chromium supports oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures.
Nickel stabilizes the austenitic structure and contributes to toughness and ductility.
Niobium stabilizes carbon in the steel, helping reduce the risk of chromium-carbide-related intergranular corrosion after exposure to sensitizing temperatures.
The controlled carbon range distinguishes TP347H from standard TP347 and supports its high-temperature service characteristics.
Typical minimum mechanical requirements for TP347H under SA-376 include:
| Property | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength | ≥ 515 MPa |
| Yield strength (0.2% offset) | ≥ 205 MPa |
| Elongation | ≥ 35% |
These are base-material requirements. Additional properties, including hardness, impact toughness and high-temperature creep performance, should be assessed where required by the project specification. Actual test results should be taken from the material test certificate.
Our manufacturing process is designed to maintain consistent fin geometry, stable attachment quality and dimensional accuracy.
1. Base tube preparation
Seamless TP347H tubes are inspected for material identity, dimensions, surface condition and straightness before finning.
2. Fin strip preparation
The fin strip is selected according to the specified material, thickness, height and profile. Its dimensions are checked before production.
3. High-frequency resistance welding
The fin strip is helically wound around the base tube. High-frequency electrical energy generates localized heat at the contact interface, and pressure forms a continuous welded bond between the fin and tube.
4. Dimensional control
Fin pitch, fin height, tube length, outside diameter and fin alignment are checked throughout production.
5. Final inspection and finishing
Completed tubes are visually inspected, measured and tested according to the approved inspection and test plan (ITP).
To ensure product quality and compliance with the purchase specification, the following inspections and tests can be included.
Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) or another approved chemical analysis method is used to verify the TP347H material composition. Positive material identification (PMI) can be performed to confirm alloy identity.
Tensile testing evaluates the base tube's tensile strength, yield strength and elongation. Testing is performed in accordance with the applicable material standard and referenced test methods.
Hardness testing may be performed when required by the purchase specification or inspection plan to assess material condition and consistency.
The base tube is subjected to hydrostatic testing where required by the applicable SA-376 requirements and purchase order. Any agreed alternative examination must comply with the governing specification.
Eddy-current or ultrasonic examination may be specified for the base tube, as applicable. The examination method and acceptance criteria must follow the governing material standard and purchase specification.
The HFW fin-to-tube joint is checked for continuous attachment, visible defects, incomplete bonding and other unacceptable discontinuities. Sample fin-bond tests, such as peel, bend or other agreed mechanical tests, can be conducted to verify attachment integrity.
Critical dimensions are measured, including:
Base tube outside diameter and wall thickness
Overall tube length
Fin height and thickness
Fin pitch and fin spacing
Fin alignment and straightness
Finished outside diameter
The base tube and fin surfaces are examined for cracks, dents, corrosion, handling damage, sharp edges and visible welding defects.
Inspection documents can include:
Material Test Certificate (MTC)
Chemical analysis report
Mechanical test report
NDE and hydrostatic test reports, where applicable
Fin weld inspection report
Dimensional inspection report
Final inspection certificate
Material and production traceability records
The final testing scope and acceptance criteria are established in the project ITP and purchase order. Tests should not be represented as completed unless supported by actual inspection records.
TP347H offers a combination of austenitic stainless-steel corrosion resistance, elevated-temperature strength and niobium stabilization. When combined with HFW fin attachment, it provides a practical heat-transfer component for specially engineered economizer systems.
The continuous welded fin helps increase the effective gas-side surface area, while the stainless-steel base tube provides the pressure-containing heat-transfer passage. This combination can help equipment designers achieve the required thermal duty within a controlled exchanger footprint.
For applications involving aggressive flue gases, high chloride exposure, sulfur-bearing compounds or severe thermal cycling, the material should be evaluated by a qualified engineer before selection.
