Product Description
Low-Finned Tubes for Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers — ASTM A179 Carbon Steel
Product Overview

Our low-finned tubes for shell-and-tube heat exchangers are designed to enhance heat-transfer performance in industrial heating and cooling applications. Manufactured using ASTM A179 seamless, cold-drawn, low-carbon steel base tubes, these products provide an economical solution for heat exchangers that require increased external surface area without the height of conventional high-fin designs.

Low-finned tubes feature closely spaced, low-profile external fins that increase the effective heat-transfer area while retaining a compact bundle configuration. They are particularly useful when one fluid has a lower heat-transfer coefficient than the other, such as gas or air on the finned side of an exchanger.

ASTM A179 is widely specified for heat-exchanger and condenser tubing because of its controlled chemical composition, cold-drawn manufacturing route, and specified mechanical properties. The tubes can be manufactured to project-specific dimensions, fin profiles, lengths, and inspection requirements to meet the thermal and mechanical demands of the intended service.

Key product features

  • Seamless, cold-drawn carbon-steel base tubes manufactured to ASTM A179/A179M.

  • Low-profile external fins to increase heat-transfer surface area.

  • Customizable fin height, pitch, tube length, and finned diameter.

  • Suitable for shell-and-tube heat exchangers, condensers, coolers, and selected process-heating systems.

  • Dimensional inspection and material traceability according to the agreed purchase specification.

  • Optional testing and documentation to meet customer and project requirements.

Applications
Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchangers

Low-finned tubes are widely used in shell-and-tube exchangers where additional surface area is required on the finned side. They can help improve thermal performance without substantially increasing the exchanger's overall dimensions.

Condensers

Suitable for selected industrial condenser duties involving steam or process vapors, subject to the thermal design, pressure rating, and corrosion conditions.

Oil Coolers and Process Coolers

Used in suitable industrial cooling equipment to transfer heat between process fluids. Carbon steel is an economical option where the fluid chemistry and operating conditions are compatible with the material.

Chemical and Petrochemical Equipment

Can be specified for selected process-fluid heating and cooling duties where the required pressure, temperature, and corrosion resistance are within the design limits.

Power and General Industrial Equipment

Applicable to certain auxiliary heat exchangers, heat-recovery systems, and industrial thermal equipment when the service conditions are compatible with ASTM A179 carbon steel.

Important dimensional note: These ranges are indicative commercial manufacturing ranges, not dimensions prescribed by ASTM A179. Actual sizes, tolerances, fin geometry, and manufacturing capability must be confirmed with the supplier. ASTM A179 covers the base tube, not the complete low-fin design.

Chemical Composition of ASTM A179 Carbon Steel

The following chemical composition limits are specified for ASTM A179/A179M carbon steel.

Element Composition (% by mass)
Carbon (C) 0.06–0.18
Manganese (Mn) 0.27–0.63
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.035
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.035

These limits apply to the steel base tube. Chemical composition should be confirmed against the material test certificate and the edition of ASTM A179 specified in the purchase order.

Mechanical Properties of ASTM A179

The standard specifies the following mechanical properties for qualifying base tubes:

Property Requirement
Tensile strength Minimum 325 MPa
Yield strength Minimum 180 MPa
Elongation in 2 in. (50.8 mm) Minimum 35%
Hardness Maximum 72 HRB

Mechanical-property acceptance depends on the applicable standard requirements, test method, specimen dimensions, and product condition. These values describe the base tube and should not be treated as independent mechanical ratings for the finished finned assembly.

Manufacturing Process
Step 1: Base-Tube Production

Seamless steel tubes are produced and cold drawn to the required outside diameter and wall thickness in accordance with ASTM A179.

Step 2: Heat Treatment

The base tubes receive the heat treatment required by the applicable ASTM A179 edition after the final cold-drawing pass.

Step 3: Surface Preparation

The tube surface is cleaned and prepared for low-fin forming. The preparation method depends on the selected finning process and the required surface finish.

Step 4: Low-Fin Forming

Low-profile fins are formed on the outside of the tube using the specified manufacturing method. Depending on the design, the fins may be integral with the base material or produced through a qualified mechanical forming process.

Step 5: Dimensional Control

The finished tubes are checked for fin height, fin pitch, overall finned diameter, tube length, straightness, and other drawing-specific requirements.

Step 6: Final Inspection and Packing

Completed tubes undergo the agreed visual and dimensional checks, material identification, documentation review, and protective packing before dispatch.

Inspection and Testing Methods

Quality control should cover both the ASTM A179 base tube and the completed low-finned product.

1. Chemical analysis: Verify the steel composition against the required carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur limits using material certificates and, when specified, product analysis.

2. Tensile testing: Confirm tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation against the standard's requirements.

3. Hardness testing: Check that the base tube meets the specified hardness limit.

4. Flattening test: Evaluate the base tube's ability to withstand the specified deformation without unacceptable cracking or defects.

5. Flaring test: Assess tube ductility and resistance to cracking during the specified flaring operation.

6. Flange test: Perform when required or specified as an applicable alternative to the flaring test under the governing standard.

7. Hydrostatic test: Verify tube integrity using the test pressure and acceptance requirements prescribed by the applicable specification and purchase order.

8. Nondestructive electric test: Apply the specified electric test as permitted by the standard and the agreed inspection plan.

9. Dimensional inspection: Measure outside diameter, wall thickness, length, straightness, fin height, fin pitch, finned diameter, and other critical dimensions.

10. Visual and surface inspection: Check for scale, unacceptable surface imperfections, fin damage, deformation, and other defects that may affect service performance.

11. Fin integrity inspection: Verify fin uniformity, profile consistency, continuity where applicable, and the specified condition of the finned surface.

12. Documentation review: Confirm material certificates, heat or batch traceability, inspection results, and packing records.

The exact inspection scope depends on the applicable standard edition, order requirements, product design, and customer inspection plan. Not every supplementary test is mandatory for every order.

Advantages of Low-Finned Tubes
Increased Heat-Transfer Area

Low-profile fins increase the external surface area available for heat exchange, helping improve performance where the finned side limits overall thermal duty.

Compact Exchanger Design

The relatively low fin height allows designers to increase surface area while retaining a compact tube-bundle arrangement.

Economical Material Selection

ASTM A179 carbon steel is a practical option for many conventional heat-exchanger services where stainless steel or higher-alloy materials are not necessary.

Suitable for Custom Engineering

Fin height, pitch, tube length, and other dimensions can be tailored to the required heat-transfer duty and exchanger configuration.

Established Inspection Requirements

The base tube is covered by a recognized material specification with defined chemical, mechanical, and integrity-testing requirements.

Material Selection and Operating Considerations

ASTM A179 carbon steel is suitable for many general industrial heat-transfer duties, but material selection must account for the process fluid, corrosion allowance, operating temperature, pressure, and cleaning requirements.

For highly corrosive fluids, seawater, or services with specific chemical compatibility requirements, a stainless-steel, copper-alloy, or higher-alloy tube may be more appropriate.

Low-fin geometry must also be selected according to the thermal calculation, pressure drop, fouling tendency, cleaning access, and tube-bundle arrangement. The completed exchanger must be designed and rated under the applicable pressure-vessel or heat-exchanger code. Compliance of the base tube with ASTM A179 alone does not establish the pressure rating of the complete exchanger.

Packaging and Delivery

Low-finned tubes are packed to minimize bending, surface damage, and fin deformation during storage and transport. Protective end caps, separators, bundle supports, and export packaging can be provided according to the order requirements.

Each bundle can be identified with the applicable material grade, dimensions, order reference, heat or batch number, quantity, and other agreed markings. Material certificates and inspection documentation can be supplied according to the contract.
