Product Description

ASTM B338 / ASME SB338 Grade 7 / Ti-0.2Pd / R52400 Titanium Tube Seamless Heat Exchanger Tube

Grade 7 titanium alloy tube (Ti with 0.12–0.25% Pd, balance Ti and residuals), conforming to ASME SB338— It comes either without a seam (seamless) or with a welded seam. Its purpose is to transfer heat between fluids while resisting corrosion, especially in acidic or salty conditions that would destroy ordinary titanium tubes. The specification for titanium tubes used in condensers and heat exchangers—and intended for heat exchanger duty (e.g., shell-and-tube units, condensers, or coolers).

Choose ASME SB338 Grade 7 (Ti-0.2Pd) for heat exchanger tubes when:

  • You need excellent resistance to chlorides (including high temperature).

  • The fluid contains dilute reducing acids (e.g., <5% HCl, <10% H₂SO₄) up to ~150°C.

  • You have tight crevices (e.g., tube-to-tubesheet, gaskets) in hot brine or acidic-chloride service.

  • You want to avoid exotic nickel alloys (C276, C22) for cost or availability reasons, but Grade 2 does not pass corrosion tests.

The funtion of adding Pd in titanium-- Palladium is a noble metal that cathodically modifies the titanium surface. In reducing acids where standard titanium's passive film fails, Pd promotes hydrogen evolution (a cathodic reaction) at a much lower overpotential, allowing titanium to spontaneously repassivate. This extends the corrosion resistance of titanium into regions normally reserved for more exotic alloys (like Ti-6Al-4V or Hastelloy).
