A Serpentine Coil Tube in Incoloy 800H with U-Bends is a premium engineered component designed for the harshest thermal environments. The material provides the necessary high-temperature strength, while the serpentine design accommodates thermal movement, ensuring long-term reliability in furnaces and high-temperature reactors.

 

 

Advantages of the U-Bend Serpentine Design:

  • Thermal Expansion Compensation: Incoloy 800H is often used where temperatures fluctuate wildly. The serpentine coil acts as a built-in expansion loop. The bends absorb the thermal expansion and contraction of the tube, reducing stress on the tube sheets and headers.

  • Compact Footprint: By stacking the passes vertically or horizontally, a very long tube length can be fitted into a small space (like a furnace or a duct).

  • Counter-Current Flow: Serpentine coils are easily arranged so the hottest fluid meets the hottest gas, maximizing thermal efficiency.

The "H" is for Heat – Specifically, a Thermal Process

While people know "H" stands for "high-temperature," the specific requirement is often overlooked:

  • It's Not Just Chemistry: To be legitimately called 800H, the material must be solution annealed at a minimum temperature of 2100°F (1149°C). This isn't just for stress relief; it's to achieve a specific ASTM grain size of 5 or coarser.

 

 

Application

 

Because of the cost and performance of Incoloy 800H, these serpentine coils are used in critical, high-temperature environments:

  • Ethylene Pyrolysis Furnaces: Used for steam cracking of hydrocarbons. The coils must withstand coking and decoking cycles at extreme temperatures.

  • Reformer Units (Hydrogen Plants): Located in the convection section of steam methane reformers to preheat feedstock.

  • Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG): Specifically in the superheater or reheater sections where steam temperatures are highest.

  • Molten Salt Heaters: In solar thermal power plants or chemical processes where the salt is heated to over 1000°F.

  • Ammunition/Explosives Manufacturing: Used in cooling tunnels where precise temperature control is required, and corrosion from byproducts is a factor.
